Introducing Narrative Writing

Rosie's Walk

This story's words are very simple about a hen, Rosie, who goes for a walk. The fun part of the story is the illustrations. They tell a hidden story about a fox. This poor fox tries to eat Rosie but keeps having something happen to him.

Picture walk the story after reading the simple text. Talk about the hidden story. These illustrations segway to allowing students to write the story from the Fox's point of view. What are his thoughts as he tries to pounce on Rosie? What is he thinking as he lands on the rake? Draw out the moment as the rake comes toward his head.

Write the first sequence as a class. Then allow groups to write another sequence. Finally, allow students to write their own story about the fox.
